Our New Ocean...

Sea Level Rise will prove to be a local issue.

Local for me is New England in general and The North Shore of Boston in particular.

For a wider scope US East Coast Sea Level Rise...

Sea Level Rise is Humanity's Common Denominator.

We all need access to The Ocean.

Maritime Commerce makes the big wheel turn.

It's the lifeline of The Global Economy.

International Trade starts and ends at The Shoreline.

If Sea Level Rise reaches the projected two foot level, container ports all over The Planet will be negatively affected.

This one potential effect makes Sea Level Rise the Common Denominator that should pull us all together.

If ports and coastal infrastructure are inundated, ships will not be able to transport goods.

We won't have time to battle over our political and religious differences.

We'll be too busy fighting over every last crumb.

The basics of modern life arrive via fleets of container ships.

Without the constant flow, we'll be in a minute by minute war for survival.

Unless we come up with a unified Global outlook on Sea Level Rise, we are up the proverbial creek without a paddle, and a twenty foot wall of water is rushing relentlessly toward us.

There can be no unified outlook as long as we don't know what to expect.

It is of critical importance to all Humanity that we devote our attention to the Sea Level Rise situation.

Science must learn to make the latest information available in the vernacular.

Perhaps then we can come up with a common understanding of a problem that is sure to affect us all.

This is real now, and there are no answers!

Here's a suggestion...click below...

Intro...

Steve Smyth here...Shoreline Earth…Lynn, Mass, USA...
Shoreline Earth provides a view toward the future.
Let this be your info source…bringing you the real skinny on Sea Level…on the level.
First and foremost…at this point in time…
We are the most dangerous aspect of Sea Level Rise.
Those of you who rely on Earth’s Shoreline for your livelihood should make this your ‘go to’ place for Sea Level Rise info and updates.
This list includes everyone from swimsuit models to marina operators to commercial fishermen to operators of huge container ships…and then some.
I know as much about impending Sea Level Rise issues as anyone alive.
My care and concern for Earth’s Shoreline is ingrained.
I’m a boat carpenter.
From boatyards, to barrooms, to beaches, my life has revolved around the water’s edge for as long as I can recall.
You may be a coastal entrepreneur, an avid boater, or someone who just loves the beach.
In fact…let’s face it…everyone on Earth has stake in this.
Everyone loves the coast.
Earth’s Shoreline is our turf.
Now, all of a sudden, our endeavors along the shoreline, be they for work or pleasure, are threatened because politically expedient windbags are over-reacting to the threat of Sea Level Rise.
Every town, city, county, and state along the US East Coast has announced plans for coastal barriers and seawalls to be constructed in advance of the rising tide.
They’re messing with our turf.

Ironically, the proper term for all this is “Coastal Protection”.
It’s catching on everywhere and spreading faster than an unchecked viral pandemic.

If all the coastal barriers projected for US East Coast are built, The Ocean will soon create a fast moving channel along the Seaward side, running from South of The Chesapeake to Cape Cod.

This channel will funnel and accelerate Northward moving storm surges, bringing warmer water North, sustaining Hurricanes further North than ever before.

This is a known fact when planning for any sort of coastal diversion.

Yet the plans continue.

I predict that if all the barriers are built, the area from New Bedford to The Cape Cod Canal will be become an open channel, flowing from Buzzard's bay to Cape Cod Bay within a few Hurricane seasons.

That's just one example.
Now is the time to stop this assault on Earth’s Shoreline before it gets totally out of control.
We can’t turn Planet Earth into The Netherlands.
Coastal Protection is the polite term for “Shoveling Shit Against The Tide”.
Really…!

Business As Usual...

As you read this page, you'll learn a lot about Sea Level Rise.

It's important that you familiarize yourself with this information.

You and I are going to pay for hasty decisions being made today that will effect the rest of our lives, our children's lives, and the lives of those yet to arrive.

The news stories currently appearing about Sea Level Rise and Coastal Protection are a perfect example of business as usual and the same ol', same ol' being applied to an issue that is totally unprecedented.

We need unprecedented solutions, not business as usual.

Here's how it goes.

Since 2007, we have all been deluged with conflicting news reports about Climate Change.

Sea Level Rise is a function of Climate Change and attendant Global Warming.

This deluge of agenda driven news and confusion stems from The Climate Crisis.

Which leads us to Sea Level Rise.

Sea Level Rise presents an instant economic threat because coastal flooding will endanger Maritime Commerce.

For starters, think 'container ships'.

You'd be hard pressed to find anything within your reach that hasn't been transported on one.

Some component of virtually everything is transported over The Ocean via container ship.

Look around you.

It all came from somewhere else.

Maritime Commerce is what makes today's Global Economy possible.

We can't sit back and let port cities become inundated and wash into The Sea.

Of course we can't let that happen.

We'd all die because the Global Economy would go belly up in no time without Maritime Commerce.

All of a sudden every mover and shaker alive has suggestions and comments on the topic of rising tide.

Unfortunately, in their haste to show the public that "We have this under control.", the movers and shakers are basing their bombastic nonsense on someone else's bombastic nonsense.

There is zero scientific evidence that we face anything like six feet of water swamping our coastal cities, as is often reported.

We may see 18" to 24" of measurable rise by the end of this century.

Stress 'may see', and only in specific locales where warming, wind, and currents drive higher tides ashore

The Ocean isn't going to suddenly overflow from melting glaciers no matter what the Global Warming theories project.

The most reasonable look at Greenland, for example, shows that if currently accepted melt rates were to continue, it would be 800 years before the ice is gone.

And, it was recently discovered that the central part of Greenland is an enormous depression that will hold half of the melted water, becoming Earth's largest body of fresh water.

The ice cap is not all going to run off and flood The Ocean.

And it is going to take 800 years if current rates of warming continue.

In simpler terms, the Greenland melt scenario is absurd.

As are all of the Polar melt images we've been flooded with recently.

News directors know from experience that the public eats up doom and gloom.

So that's what we get.

If you really want to worry, try Asteroids, Sea Level is nowhere near as imminent or as potentially deadly as an Asteroid strike.

That could happen next week.

The worst case Sea Level Rise scenario pales by comparison.

So, "what is the big deal" with Sea Level you may ask.

Again, it's all about business as usual.

Everyone involved with coastal endeavor, from humble fishermen in uncharted waters, to extremely wealthy property owners on the US East Coast, faces a new threat to their world.

The wealthy want seawalls instantly, with no consideration for where the water they divert will end up.

We're talking about The Ocean.

It has to go somewhere.

The humble, off the grid fishermen have no clue about any of this, but they are noticing that their island is getting smaller by the day.

The fishermen will adapt, move, or die.

The wealthy coastal dwellers will engineer temporary solutions to protect what is theirs.

With little or no consideration for the consequences to anyone else.

"How dare The Ocean mess with my success."

Business as usual once again.

Take A Look...You'll Feel Better...

Sea Level Rise, and our response to it, is a rapidly changing phenomenon that will alter our very existence.

Even if Sea Level Rise never happens.

No kidding!

Let yourself absorb this news.

Check out the rest of the page.

Don't miss the linked images and green text.

Read as much as holds your interest.

You can always come back.

Take a few minutes to consider your thoughts.

You'll see things differently.

Stay tuned to Shoreline Earth.

Come back often.

There's much more still to come.

In the previous month alone, the science has done a flip-flop.

Local politicians have promised to build seawalls around every coastal community on Earth.

Media outlets are going bananas trying to report on something nobody really understands.

The media madness alone makes it a major event.

Spurious, agenda driven info/data absorbed via the web will lead us down a slippery slope.

At best.

Confusion reigns!

Take a look!

Sea Level...On The Level...

Rising Sea Level is an escalating Global Threat.

The worst is not going to happen tomorrow, but the warming, expanding Ocean is already showing us its potential effects.

Hastily formulated proposals to build seawalls and barriers along Earth's Shoreline are being presented with very little consideration for long term repercussions.

It's called "Coastal Protection".

Reacting and responding before we learn more is not going to accomplish anything in the long run.

In fact, it's clear to me that remediation will prove detrimental.

It's time to take a deeper look at Sea Level Rise before committing to Coastal Remediation.

Hopefully, "Shoreline Earth" will get us all to take that deeper look before we go crazy altering Earth's Shoreline.

Coming soon to a beach near you...!

Example of Coastal Protection...imagine the Seabed under the dredge...!

Our frantic response and reaction to potential Sea Level Rise via Coastal Protection will cost countless billions of $$$...be detrimental to Earth's Shoreline in the long run...and it will not work...!

The Shoreline Is My Home...

...and The Shoreline is in trouble.

Sea Level is rising.

What should we do?

As an independent boat carpenter, my existence has long revolved around Earth's Shoreline.

This personal interest led to an intense study of Sea Level Rise via the web.

Along with reading hundreds of articles and reports, I've been fortunate enough to correspond with the top people in the field when questions arise.

There's a lot of spurious info/data being spewed by various media outlets.

Dialog with these experts allowed me to sort the media hype from the science.

The material below is well researched and substantiated as thoroughly as possible, given the current state of Sea Level Rise knowledge.

My goal is to present a realistic idea of what is likely to happen v. agenda driven, alarmist speculation.

Here's my take on Sea Level Rise...the real skinny...with solutions...from someone who truly loves and respects Earth's Shoreline...can't beat that!

Sea Level Rise...

"A Deeper Look at Sea Level Rise" will provide greater understanding of Earth's expanding Ocean.

For starters...

The North Pole, South Pole, and Greenland are not going to melt and overflow The Ocean.

The Ocean is expanding because it's absorbing heat from Earth's Atmosphere.

Warming and expansion are changing the flow of Ocean water in the upper layer, causing regional Sea Level Rise in predictable areas.

Sea Level Rise is not the entire Ocean suddenly bulging upwards.

It's all about repetitive, localized surges and upswells, caused by winds, changing currents, and rising temperatures.

Some areas of Earth's Shoreline will experience considerably higher sea level than others due to the confluence of these factors.

The above outlook is based upon newly collected satellite info/data.

Sea Level is determined by floating altimeters relaying Ocean depths to satellites and back to the scientists.

This method began in 1992 with the launch of Earth observation satellites.

Comparisons are then made with earlier, less accurate measurements to determine long range info/data.

As you can imagine, this correlation leaves a large margin of error when looking back Centuries for figures to compare.

At this point, Sea Level Rise is not a very precise science.

The error factor is close to the total measured change thus far.

But...

Here's one thing you can bet on.

The US East Coast is one of the areas where Ocean warming leads inevitably to rising Sea Level.

Look at this map of Atlantic Ocean Currents

You'll see that The Gulf Stream consists of warm water traveling North.

As The Ocean warms and expands, more warm water at the surface will travel North with The Gulf Stream.

We've all seen the effects of Hurricane Sandy.

Picture the same scenario with Ocean depths a foot or two higher.

These Climate Change driven storms will be regular events within the lifetime of half the people on Earth.

The warming Ocean, moving North, will enable Hurricanes to sustain their power as they head Northward along The East Coast.

The expected pattern will no longer be 'watch until the storm reaches Cape Hatteras' as winds start to weaken and the brunt of the Hurricane heads out to Sea.

Soon, it will be more like 'watch until the storm reaches NYC' before we can expect winds to diminish and the storm to break apart.

As we all know, Hurricanes don't always diminish and drift out to Sea after reaching Cape Hatteras.

Some seem to have minds of their own as they wreak havoc along the Northeast Coast.

These same conditions will continue to happen, except NYC will take over the hot spot from Cape Hatteras.

Full strength Hurricanes will regularly make land over NYC before proceeding Northward with their full tropical force intact.

They will be pushing tides that may start out two feet higher before the storm.

That, my friends, is not a pretty picture for the Northeastern United States.

Imagine the economic chaos!

This single predictable effect of Sea Level Rise alone is enough to start taking this seriously.

There will be countless more effects of Climate Change and Sea Level Rise to confront as we Forge Ahead

Many are pure speculation, but this one is for real and it's NOW...!

This beautiful beach will soon be the enemy.

Sea Level Rise threatens to turn Earth's Shoreline into a never ending battleground.

Us against the Sea.

Not a good idea.

Sea Level Rise (SLR ) is a brand new issue.

The data is raw, and there's a lot of it.

Nobody knows what's going to happen.

But Government and Business are betting that SLR is real and it's effects could be catastrophic.

How can we STOP the water?

Right now, plans for dealing with SLR are based on Coastal Remediation.

Proposals consist of dams, dykes, canals, locks, and all manner of innovative barriers designed to prevent the rising tide from inundating coastal locales.

Then what?

Do we protect the Jersey Shore and NYC with an enormous barrier while destroying much of Cape Cod as the diverted tidal surge moves North?

The Ocean has to go somewhere.

There is nothing else on Earth with the relentless thrust of the tide.

Holding back The Ocean is right up there with stopping Asteroids on the futility scale.

That said, we must adapt to these changes.

Here's to Earth's New Shoreline...let it rise...learn to love it...!

Nobody can stop it.

Planet Earth is changing.

That's nothing new.

Earth has been changing since day one, and will continue to do so forever.

It's the natural course of events.

You've heard people say, "...go with the flow."

The flow is inland.

Tap into our natural instinct for survival, take time to observe, and start changing in harmony with our Environment.

Adaptation got us this far...!

In the long run, pulling back will also prove far more economically practical than trying to hold back the Sea.

Earth's Ocean is expanding.

The Shoreline is changing.

Here's another old phrase that rings true in this situation, "...like shoveling shit against the tide."

Keep it in mind as we Forge Ahead.

***

Sea Level Rise is a function of Climate Change.

Climate Change is a vast and fascinating concept.

The countless variables and potential scenarios attached to Climate Change will provide us an exciting new outlook toward Planet Earth.

Our growing sense of Stewardship and new found awareness will prove good for us in the long run.

But this period of change is not going to be a walk in the park.

There will be some very real hurdles to leap as we encounter new and unexpected challenges on a regular basis.

For example...

SLR is certain to emerge as the ultimate Climate Change Boogeyman.

SLR presents a Clear and Present Danger to The Global Economy.

It’s happening as you read this.

Maritime Commerce is essential to the success of today’s Global Economy.

SLR threatens Shorelines everywhere on Earth.

Maritime Commerce starts and ends at The Shoreline.

The constant flow of goods over Earth’s Ocean makes the big wheel turn.

The flow will grind to a halt if SLR inundates our seaports.

Make no mistake, the effects of SLR are being felt at this instant.

Simply put...

Ocean expansion is part of a lengthy natural process.

We are not going to wake up any morning soon to find The Ocean has suddenly risen.

But we will awaken to ever increasing prices on virtually everything we touch.

Because everything we touch is part of the Global flow of goods over Earth’s Ocean.

Humanity’s success in The 21st Century relies on decisions we make today RE SLR.

Making those decisions will be much simpler if we know what’s actually happening.

First and foremost...

Nobody has enough info to claim certainty.

Those who do so are pushing an agenda.

Here at Shoreline Earth our goal is to provide Humanity with info and solutions as we progress into...

The Climate Unknown
